SANTA FE, N.M., April 15 /PRNewswire/ — Civility Mutual, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, launches today as the first and only membership organization to offer education, training and CMEs for physician – patient communication effectiveness, and provides residency directors with the educational tools and assessments their residents need to fulfill the most difficult requirements of the ACGME Outcomes Project.

“Civility in health care begins with effective communication, driven by respect and empathy for the patient,” says Dr. Michael Woods, founder and principal of Civility Mutual. “The ability to assess and adapt to situations with a variety of patients provides a strong advantage in the quest for quality outcomes and patient care.” Civility Mutual was founded because inadequate communication is often cited as a factor in poor patient outcomes and adverse health events.

Physician Training and CMEs

Physicians and their organizations are being directed to increase operational efficiency while simultaneously improving patient safety in order to raise the bar on health care quality.

Unfortunately, many providers have never received the proper education and training required to lead such initiatives, and are struggling in the process. The specific training provided to physicians also can help prevent medical malpractice lawsuits.

Civility Mutual can not only help physicians provide safer care, improved communication and better quality outcomes, it also offers physicians with a competitive advantage, as more than 60 percent of patients said they would switch from their current provider to one who is certified in “patient centered care.”

Residency Programs to Fulfill ACGME Requirements

Residency programs are being directed to raise the bar on health care quality by improving physician communication and interpersonal skills while maintaining a high degree of professionalism. Unfortunately, the proper education and training required to lead such initiatives has not been offered until now. Civility Mutual is the first and only membership organization to offer education and training on ACGME required competencies, specifically focusing on physician – patient communication effectiveness.

“Civility Mutual’s tools provide critically needed benefits to our residency program,” says Mario Pacheco, MD, Program Director of the University of New Mexico’s Family Practice Residency at St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe. “The program is very comprehensive and is key in helping us meet the ACGME requirements.”

Civility Mutual has developed on-line research guides, communication assessments and educational modules to coach physicians in apology and disclosure. Civility Mutual also offers training curriculum in other key factors of effective communication — gender, ethnicity, literacy, socioeconomics, time, and behavior. Civility Mutual provides physicians and residents with strategies to understand and address these challenges in order to achieve a patient-centered practice.
