Kansas University Physicians names CEO

Kansas University Physicians Inc. has promoted Jim Albertson to CEO.
Albertson, a member of the administrative leadership team at the University of Kansas Medical Center, was KUPI’s chief financial officer and senior associate dean for finance at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He joined KUMC in 2004 and has more than 30 years of health care experience.
He started as CEO of KUPI on Feb. 1, Dennis McCulloch, a spokesman for the University of Kansas Hospital, said Friday.
“Jim Albertson’s leadership and expertise were an essential part of our success in crafting a new affiliation agreement with The University of Kansas Hospital and KUPI,” Dr. Barbara Atkinson, KUMC’s executive vice chancellor and dean of the KU School of Medicine, said in a release. “His remarkable effort was just one of the many ways Jim has contributed to the KU School of Medicine’s success during a time of unprecedented growth.”
Naming Albertson as KUPI’s CEO is one of the first steps resulting from the recent affiliation agreement among KUMC, the hospital and KUPI, and it establishes KUPI as a more independent entity. According to the release, Albertson’s goals for KUPI are to:
- Develop practice standards and provide management to help with and ensure development of these standards, and provide ongoing monitoring.
- Develop performance benchmarks and methods for awarding the achievement of practice standards.
- Determine procedures to apply for, approve the use of and manage the KUPI Strategic Investment Fund to expand the clinical enterprise.
- Help facilitate development of the joint physician recruitment planning process among each department and the hospital, KUMC and KUPI.
- Help plan and monitor construction of a medical office building, its management structure, common services, equipment and furnishing needs, space use and staffing needs.
- Help direct implementation and maintenance of O2, the electronic medical record system the hospital recently started.
