A California firm has purchased OHIC Insurance Co., one of Ohio’s largest medical malpractice insurers.

The Doctors Co. of Napa, Calif., bought the Columbus-based physician insurer for an undisclosed amount.

The Doctors Co. now insures more than 2,000 doctors and writes about $100 million in premiums in Ohio, making the state its second-largest market.

“By merging the Ohio staffs of The Doctors Co. and OHIC, we are solidly in a leadership position in our commitment to the Ohio medical community, said Rob Francis, chief operating officer of The Doctors Co. “We will have over 70 dedicated employees serving our Ohio insureds. These individuals will assure continuation of our fierce defense of policyholders, our industry-leading patient safety efforts and our tort reform advocacy in Ohio.

OHIC will maintain its Columbus headquarters and will be a subsidiary of The Doctors Co.
